Coatings in Biomedical Device Applications

Many types of coatings are used in the manufacturing and preparation of biomedical devices. Some coatings are designed to protect equipment from corrosion, while others are designed to prevent tissue damage, infection, or rejection reactions. Drug delivery coatings have also become increasingly common. Other biomedical devices, such as angioplasty balloons, have independent membranes with uniform and fixed thickness to function properly.

The measurement methods for the thickness of these coatings vary, but one thing is certain. Using ordinary methods (such as weighing a certain part before and after coating), it is impossible to detect incomplete coating coverage or uneven coating that can cause device failure.

FilmetricsThe technology

Filmetrics offers a wide range of solutions for measuring biomedical coatings:

·Bracket:The small coating area on the bracket usually requires microscopic instruments. Our F40 has been used in dozens of laboratories to measure passivation and/or drug delivery coatings. Our measurement system automatically measures the thickness of the entire support surface by simply rotating the support during measurement.

·Implants:Irregular surface shapes are often a challenge when measuring coatings on implanted devices. Filmetrics offers a full range of probes for this purpose.

·Guidewire and guide needle:Like brackets, these instruments can often be used with microscope instruments like F40. F42 can be used for two-dimensional thickness mapping within the microscopic region.

·Thickness of catheter and angioplasty balloon:Thickness greater than 100 microns and visible spectral opacity

Measurement Example

A stent is a small tube made of plastic or metal that is inserted into a blood vessel to prevent constriction. Many times, these stents are treated with polymer or drug coatings to improve functionality and corrosion resistance. Equipped with a 20x objective lens (25 micron spot) on the F40, we are able to measure the thickness of these coatings along the outer diameter of the stainless steel bracket. This powerful instrument provides fast, reliable, non-destructive, and sample free thickness measurement for the medical device industry.
