What is seed coating technology?

Image Keywords

Seed coating technology is a plant protection technique widely promoted in China in the 1990s.

Image Keywords

The so-called seed coating refers to the use of mechanical or manual methods to uniformly coat the surface of seeds with seed coating agents containing various components such as insecticides, fungicides, compound fertilizers, trace elements, plant growth regulators, slow-release agents, and film-forming agents in a certain proportion, forming a smooth and firm film. As the seeds germinate, sprout, emerge, and grow, the effective ingredients in the coating are gradually absorbed by the plant roots and transmitted to various parts of the seedling plant, enabling the seeds and seedlings to control seed borne, soil borne, and underground and above ground pests. The micro fertilizer in the medicinal film can fully exert its effectiveness before relying on the bottom fertilizer. Therefore, coated seeds grow vigorously during the seedling stage, with dark green leaves, well-developed roots, and robust plants, thus achieving the goal of increasing yield and income.

Seed coating technology is a mature crop cultivation technique that has played an important role in increasing agricultural yield and income over the years. Since the beginning of the new century, seed coating technology has been widely promoted and applied in agricultural production, promoting a significant improvement in crop quality and yield.

The purpose and significance of seed coating

Seed coating technology is a new technology that has emerged with the modernization of agriculture. The main purpose is to make the seeds suitable for sowing, and to enhance their characteristics such as disease and insect prevention, drought resistance, cold resistance, and moisture resistance, promote seed emergence, increase yield, and improve product quality.

Seed coating generally has the following advantages:

1.

For seeds with small and irregular grains, after pelletizing treatment, the seed volume can be increased, and the shape and size can be uniform, which is conducive to mechanized sowing

2.

Reduce the incidence rate and death rate of crop seedlings, and improve the effect of disease prevention and seedling protection.

3.

Preventing and controlling pests and diseases during the seedling stage

4.

Promote the development and growth of seedlings, with well-developed root systems and robust plants, thereby achieving the goal of increasing yield and income.

5.

Reducing environmental pollution is beneficial for protecting the environment.

6.

Save on planting and medicine, reduce production costs.

7.

Improve the appearance of seeds and enhance their marketability.

Types of seed coating

At present, seed coating methods are mainly divided into three categories

Image Keywords

1: Marubenized seeds

tutorial

Use adhesives to adhere non seed stains such as fungicides, insecticides, dyes, and fillers to the surface of seeds. Usually made into a spherical shape. This method is mainly applicable to seeds of crops, vegetables, and other crops.

2: Coated seeds

tutorial

By using adhesives, trace elements, fungicides, insecticides, and other substances are adhered to the surface of seeds to improve their germination characteristics. The difference between this method and pelletizing seeds is that it does not significantly change the shape of the seeds. Suitable for medium and large seeds.

3: Encapsulated seed

tutorial

Using film-forming agents, non seed substances such as fungicides, insecticides, fertilizers, dyes, etc. are wrapped around the surface of the seeds to form a thin film. Generally applicable to large and medium seeds. The encapsulated seeds using this method are also the main objects we measure

Method of seed coating

There are mainly two methods: mechanical coating method and manual coating method.

Mechanical coating method

_

Suitable for large seed companies to use coating machines for coating.

(1) Ordinary coating machine:The ordinary coating machine mainly consists of a coating pot power system, a heating system, and an exhaust system. When working, the coating pot rotates at a certain speed, and the tablets roll inside the pot. The coating material solution is intermittently sprayed into the pot manually. Preheated hot air is continuously blown into the coating pot for drying. When the coating meets the specified quality and requirements, the discharge can be stopped.

(2) Fluidized coating machine:Fluidized coating machine is a device that uses a nozzle to spray coating solution onto the surface of tablets suspended in the air to achieve the purpose of coating.

(3) Mesh coating: The mesh coating machine is a relatively novel coating equipment, characterized by a circular hole (mesh) with a diameter of 1.8-2.5mm on the body of the coating pot. When working, the mesh coating pot rotates at a certain speed, and the tablets roll inside the pot. The coating liquid is sprayed into the pot through the nozzle. The purified air preheated to a certain temperature enters the coating pot through the inlet pipe and the mesh holes on the upper part of the pot, then passes through the pores of the moving tablets, and finally enters the exhaust pipe through the mesh holes on the lower part of the steel body.

Artificial coating method

_

There are three simple artificial coating methods:

(1) Plastic bag coating method: Put two spare plastic bags of the same size together, take a certain amount of seeds and corresponding amount of seed coating agent and put them in the inner plastic bag, tie the bag mouth, then quickly rub with both hands until well mixed, pour out and set aside.

(2) Large bottle or small iron drum coating: Prepare a large glass bottle or small iron drum with a lid. If it can hold 2000 grams of large bottle or small iron drum, it should be filled with 1000 grams of seeds and the corresponding amount of seed coating agent. Immediately shake quickly and mix well until well combined. Pour out and set aside.

(3) Round bottomed big pot coating: First, fix the big pot, clean and dry it, then weigh a certain amount of seeds and pour them into the pot. Then pour the corresponding amount of seed coating agent onto the seeds, quickly flip and mix with an iron shovel or wooden stick to make the seed coating agent evenly and quickly solidify into a film on the surface of the seeds. After that, take it out and put it into a polypropylene double-layer woven bag for safekeeping.

Thickness control and measurement of seed coating

Image Keywords

For the control of surface facial mask thickness of seed coating, the Filmetrics film thickness meter F3-s1310 can be used to test the thickness of seed coating film.

Measuring principle

Light of different wavelengths will be reflected at the top and bottom of the film, and the total reflected light amount is the superposition of these two parts of reflected light. Due to the wave nature of light, these two parts of reflected light may interfere with constructive interference (intensity addition) or destructive interference (intensity subtraction), depending on their phase relationship. The phase relationship depends on the optical path difference between these two parts of the reflected light, which is determined by the thickness of the film, the optical constant, and the wavelength of the light. When the phase difference is an integer multiple of the wavelength. Generate constructive superposition, where the reflectivity is at its maximum; When the phase difference is half a wavelength, destructive superposition occurs and the reflectivity is low; The superposition between integer multiples and half wavelength results in an interference pattern with a reflectivity between the maximum and minimum reflections.
